The wisdom of crowds

books No Comments »

highly recommend reading this book, It is well written in an easy to follow prose, which builds throughout its chapters on the information it wishes to divulge.  Within the book you will be greeted with many examples of why the thoughts of many are better than one and i challenge you not to put its principles into action by the end of chapter one , let alone the end of the book.  One of my favorite sections refers to science and how knowledge is one of the few resources that does not diminish with use.  It details how ‘open science’ emerged with knowledge becoming increasingly non-proprietary and information being freely shared  with the public; this ties in nicely with the concepts around open-source software, of which i am a great follower.

My techncial (weekly) podcast listening

podcasts No Comments »

I keep on getting asked which podcasts I listen to, so i thought it a good idea to add a link to my favourites here. I listen to each of these on a weekly basis, this takes up all my communiting time, but it is time well spent. If you have time to only listen to one a week you should listen to This Week In Tech (TWIT). Inside the net, is an easy listen as a next best selection and then onto Security now and Floss weekly if your really a geek. On the java side you can’t beat the Javaposse the participants are Tor Norbye (Sun Microsystems), Carl Quinn (Google), Dick Wall (New Energy Associates), Joe Nuxoll (Apple).

Aborted Landing at Innsbruk Airport

misc No Comments »

oh what fun, i am not the greatest fan of flying, so an aborted landing was not the most pleasant experiance in the past week. We were only about 200 feet off the ground when the pilot decided to go to full power and point his plane at the sky (there are a number of montains around innsbruk, so best not to take chances). The pilot said a cloud bank had come in and it was probably best that he did not land, as he couldn’t see thh ground. Personally i could see the ground just fine, so belive it was more likley the co-pilots first practice landing at innsbruk or maybe there was something on the runnway. Either way it was not may favourite way to land.
